History and heritage of Zermatt

Zermatt grew from an Alpine or mountain community shaped by regional trade and traditional highland life, before developing as a winter resort in the nineteenth or twentieth century. Its historic village fabric and mountain architecture preserve the character of Switzerland's upland heritage.
